Learn Snowboard Carving in 2 Minutes
Get ready to shine this upcoming snow season!
You will need
Snowboards and ski boots
A well-maintained beginner ski slope
Or intermediate ski slopes
Start sliding down the mountain. Bend your knees slightly and shift your weight onto your front leg.
Practice traversing using the front and back edges of your skis—keep the skis sharply upright, with your knees and ankles bent. As you glide smoothly along the track without slipping, lightly grip the edges of the skis with your hands.
Once you’ve mastered gliding sideways across the snow without slipping—keeping your weight on your front leg, turning your head toward the slope in the direction you want to go—bend your knees and lower your body, leaning slightly onto the back edge of your skis. At this point, you’ve already begun carving. Your shoulders and the rest of your torso will naturally follow the movement of your head.
Tip
To maintain proper posture, simply use your forearms. As you turn your head, extend your forearms and swing your arms so that your hands remain parallel to where you want to go.
When you enter a turn, bend your knees deeper, but make sure your center of gravity stays over the top of your skis, allowing their edges to bite into the snow. Remember to apply even pressure with both feet.
Tip
The faster you turn, the more you’ll need to bend your knees to keep your glide smooth.
To stop turning, you can twist your head and body until your head tilts upward while simultaneously pressing down on the back edge of the ski.
Stop and take a look at the trail you’ve left in the snow. If it’s a thin line, then you’ve nailed it. If not, keep practicing!

Did you know? It wasn’t until the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, that slalom skiing became an Olympic event.
