Counting down the frustrating and baffling behaviors in swimming pools

Swimmers who frequent pools often have great personal qualities—especially those who enjoy outdoor swimming. Yet, even in pool environments designed for casual summer fun and water play, you’ll still encounter individuals who seem oblivious to basic public etiquette and lack proper manners. Their behaviors can leave fellow swimmers frustrated and speechless. Have you ever experienced any of these situations? Or perhaps there’s something else you’d like to add?

  1. Long conversations in the pool—some by the edge, others floating in the middle, with groups of three or five chatting together in close-knit clusters.

  2. Showcasing a half-hearted butterfly stroke in the pool, forcefully activating the "Butterfly Clear-Cut" skill—pretending to be the pool's janitor and leaving everyone else with nowhere to swim.

  3. Sitting with legs dangling over the edge of the pool, it’s undignified and makes others want to keep their distance.

  4. Playing and splashing around in the middle of the pool, treating it like a water park.

  5. When multiple people swim in the same lane, instead of following pool etiquette—such as staying to the right and swimming in the same direction, or each occupying half the lane without interfering—they recklessly swim toward each other, even daring to risk collisions.

  6. When multiple people swim in one lane without regard for others, relentless practice of the freestyle kick ends up making it impossible for everyone else to swim smoothly.

  7. When practicing dive starts in a lane where swimmers are already swimming or even diving underwater, it’s easy to accidentally step on someone.

  8. Taking unauthorized video footage of others swimming in the pool without their permission

  9. Showing off in the kids' pool and the semi-competition lane for beginner swimmers—what a shameless, seasoned swimming veteran!

  10. Being overly eager to teach others shows disrespect, as it involves commenting on and guiding someone's swimming skills without their consent.

  11. Spitting, blowing your nose, or even urinating in the pool—showing little regard for public health. (Though most often, it’s the seats in changing rooms and equipment seats at gyms that actually cause the biggest public health concerns.)

  12. Practicing sculling alone in deep water without the supervision of an experienced swimmer could leave you unable to receive timely assistance from fellow swimmers in nearby lanes if an emergency arises.

  13. Swimming pool temporarily sets up water lanes to host swimming classes.

  14. Place your slippers by the poolside, alongside the water bottles of your fellow swimmers.

  15. Bringing food into the swimming pool area

  16. A personal trainer shouts loudly at students in the pool lane—either one-on-one or in pairs—his voice echoing throughout the entire venue.
