2024 Budapest Short Course World Championships: Summary of Infractions (Part 1)




According to the official results, a total of 22 infractions were recorded at the 2024 Budapest Short Course Swimming World Championships, including 4 in butterfly, 1 in backstroke, 7 in breaststroke, 3 in freestyle, and 7 in individual medley (with freestyle and medley events also counting as relay races).
Combining the scorecards with CCTV's broadcast, we were able to identify 17 out of a total of 22 fouls. The rules associated with the most frequent fouls, in order (unofficial statistics provided for reference only), are:

1. According to FINA Rule 7.5, the butterfly kick motion during the breaststroke phase (particularly the final kick before turning or reaching the wall) occurred a total of 7 times—both in individual events and relays.
2. World Aquatics Rule 8.4 regarding the two-handed wall-touch action: three times per event;
3. World Aquatics Rule 10.12: Regarding the three false starts in relay baton exchanges;
4. World Aquatics Rule 7.1 specifies that, for the butterfly kick during the long-arm stroke in breaststroke—whether in individual events or relays—it should be performed a total of 2 times.
5. World Aquatics Rule 9.2: Regarding the body pitch position after a freestyle turn—once per relay event;
6. World Aquatics Rule 8.3 states that, for butterfly kick with alternating movements, there should be only one instance per event.

Next, we’ll analyze the specific fouls from this year’s Short Course World Championships, one by one, using footage of the incidents—stay tuned!
