01 Pairish Ski Resort

Introduction: If you believe that bigger is better and are eager to hit the slopes in July, head to Perisher Ski Resort in the Snowy Mountains region of southeastern New South Wales, Australia. This ski area comprises four interconnected resorts within the Snowy Mountains, making it arguably the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere, with 47 lift routes designed to cater to skiers of all levels. Perisher boasts a relatively high starting point at 5,400 feet, and the resort has invested heavily in state-of-the-art snowmaking equipment to ensure abundant snow coverage—far surpassing other ski destinations across Australia. However, given the mountains' modest vertical drop of just 6,700 feet, most of the runs tend to be on the shorter side.

Basic Information:

With over 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, Perisher Ski Resort boasts seven majestic mountains, including the towering Mt. Perisher, which reaches a peak elevation of 2,054 meters. The resort is home to Australia's highest-altitude lift system, capable of whisking guests up to an impressive 2,034 meters—and offering breathtaking views of Mt. Kosciuszko along the way.

Snow season end date: October 5

02 Sanzui Mountain Ski Resort

Introduction: While many ski resorts in the Southern Hemisphere rely on the summer skiing gimmick to attract North American visitors—rather than emphasizing diverse terrain and challenging slopes—New Zealand’s largest ski resort on the South Island, Three Peaks, takes a different approach. Spread across four valleys above the treeline and spanning 1,359 acres, this resort offers not only exceptionally wide, impeccably groomed runs tailored for intermediate skiers but also long, steep descents that thrill expert riders—and even features trails right near cliff edges (though just 10% of the slopes are specifically designed for beginners). Another standout feature here is the exceptional quality of the snow, thanks to the resort’s prime location at the eastern foothills of the Southern Alps, an area renowned for its powerful winds and dry, powder-like snow. The ideal time to visit is late July onward, when school holidays in the Southern Hemisphere have largely wrapped up. For accommodations and dining, travelers can head to Wanaka, a picturesque lakeside town about 16 miles east of the resort, or Queenstown, nestled 62 miles south—a vibrant hub popular among adventure enthusiasts.

Basic Information:

Cable cars: 1 high-speed six-person chairlift, 1 four-person chairlift, 1 surface-area drag lift, and 1 magic carpet lift—collectively capable of transporting 4,500 skiers per hour.

03 Las Lenas Ski Resort

Introduction: Las Lenas Ski Resort is truly remote. The easiest way to reach it is by taking a weekly charter flight from Buenos Aires to a small airport, followed by a one-hour drive to the ski area. Yet, every skier who makes the journey will agree it’s well worth it—this place boasts some of the most diverse and challenging expert-level terrain in the world, featuring massive cirque valleys and razor-sharp, rock-surrounded gullies. While the piste map lists just 29 runs, the possibilities here are endless: you can carve your way across thousands of pristine acres of untouched powder slopes that stretch as far as the eye can see. All these slopes are easily accessible via the Marte lift system, which ultimately leads back to the base camp nestled at the mountain’s foot—though for ultimate safety, we strongly recommend hiring a guide. At lower elevations and on gentler slopes, there’s an abundance of wide, beginner-to-intermediate-friendly runs perfect for exploring. Last year, a new chairlift was added to enhance access to these areas. Plus, several hotels and apartment complexes designed with easy board-in/board-out access make life at base camp incredibly convenient—but let’s be clear: you didn’t come all this way just to soak in hot springs!

Slope Map:

Basic Information:

Ski area: 17,500 hectares; elevation drop: 1,200 meters

Skiing: Green runs (15%), Blue runs (45%), Red runs (35%), Black runs (5%)

Opening hours: June 18 to October 5
