Wang Shun: Thank you all for your kind support, but please don’t organize any form of cheering or encouragement for me.

On December 4, swimmer Wang Shun updated his Weibo, expressing gratitude for everyone's support—but kindly asking fans not to send any form of encouragement his way. He looks forward to meeting everyone both on and off the pool deck!

Previously, the General Administration of Sport of China, the Chinese Olympic Committee, and numerous athletes have clearly expressed their rejection of the "fan culture" phenomenon in sports. On August 28, the General Administration of Sport of China convened a special meeting focused on addressing the chaos caused by sports-related fan circles. Gao Zhidan, Director and Party Secretary of the Administration, attended the meeting and delivered a speech, emphasizing the need to integrate efforts to tackle fan-circle into the broader ideological work of the sports system. He underscored the importance of strengthening political awareness, insight, and execution, while proactively enhancing the ability to anticipate and respond effectively. The administration is determined to curb the escalating trend of sports "fan culture," firmly eliminating the unhealthy soil and conditions that allow distorted fan-circle practices to take root and thrive within the sports sector. This move aims to create a stable and supportive environment conducive to achieving the strategic goal of building a strong sports nation.

Gao Zhidan stated, "The chaotic practices within 'fan circles' severely disrupt the order of sports activities, tarnish the reputation of the sports industry, and damage the image of the sports community. Moreover, they profoundly distort the spirit of sports, erode its inherent values, and weaken its core functions—effectively making them a major risk factor that threatens the healthy development of sports. Currently, this distorted 'fan culture' is rapidly spreading into the sports arena, deepening its negative influence and posing an urgent challenge that demands immediate action. Addressing this issue is not only a necessary step in ensuring the sports system thoroughly implements and upholds the important speech delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping during his meeting with the Chinese sports delegation, but also a vital test of our commitment to carrying forward the positive spirit showcased at the Paris Olympics. It underscores our resolve to build on the achievements made through central inspections and rectifications, while strengthening efforts in ideological, moral, and (work style) building, as well as reinforcing ideological and political work."

Gao Zhidan emphasized the need to firmly resist the distorted "fan culture," urging sports professionals to "stay true to themselves," pursue integrity, cultivate positive values, and uphold moral principles. Athletes must adopt a sound outlook on life, approach fame and fortune with rationality, and fully leverage their role as role models—using outstanding athletic achievements and an exemplary spirit to drive the healthy, sustainable development of sports. Meanwhile, leaders should embrace a proper view of political achievements, avoiding opportunistic tactics or media hype, and instead focus on grounded, steady progress that genuinely connects with the people. Finally, the sports sector itself must adhere to a correct development philosophy centered on the people, actively guarding against the influence of profit-driven values and remaining vigilant against the growing trend toward excessive commercialization.
