15th National Games Diving: Wang Weiying and Wang Zongyuan Win Gold Medals

The diving events of the 15th National Games continued on the 4th at the Guangdong Provincial Olympic Sports Center Swimming and Diving Hall. In the women's individual all-around competition, Guangdong athlete Wang Weiying clinched the gold medal with a score of 700.20 points, securing her team's third gold of the Games. Shanghai's Zhang Minjie finished second, while Hunan's Qu Zhixin took home the bronze. Meanwhile, in the men's 1-meter springboard event, Hubei's Wang Zongyuan claimed the top spot, with teammate Zheng Jiuyuan claiming the bronze. The silver medal went to Shandong veteran Tai Xiaohu.

In the women's individual all-around final held this morning, 15 athletes from 12 teams competed. The all-around event was conducted as a single-elimination final, featuring two disciplines: the 3-meter springboard and the 10-meter platform. During the opening round on the 10-meter platform, Guangdong’s Wang Weiying showcased impressive form, topping the standings with a score of 363.45 points. Hunan’s Qu Zhixin followed closely in second place with 347.90 points, while Shanghai’s Zhang Minjie rounded out the top three with 331.65 points. On the 3-meter springboard, Wang Weiying once again delivered a steady performance, ultimately clinching her second gold medal of the Games with an outstanding total score of 700.20 points. Meanwhile, Shanghai’s Zhang Minjie staged a thrilling comeback in the final dive to edge out her opponent, securing the silver medal with a total of 680.85 points. Hunan’s Qu Zhixin claimed the bronze with 677.10 points. After the competition, Wang Weiying expressed that she felt in great shape today. Competing "at home" this time, she was also heartened by the enthusiastic support and encouragement from the crowd. "I’m grateful for my own perseverance and determination not to give up," she said, adding, "I’m equally thankful for the unwavering support from my team and the camaraderie of my teammates."

The men's 1-meter springboard final saw 18 athletes competing for the championship, including world champions like Wang Zongyuan and Zheng Jiuyuan, as well as seasoned veterans such as Peng Jianfeng and Tai Xiaohu. Although after the first three dives, Wang Zongyuan temporarily ranked second, trailing by just 2.2 points, he delivered a stunning performance in the remaining three rounds. Ultimately, he clinched the gold medal for the Hubei team with a total score of 492.30, securing the very first diving gold of this year’s National Games—and marking his first-ever individual gold medal at the event. His teammate, Zheng Jiuyuan, claimed the bronze with 443.00 points. Meanwhile, veteran athlete Tai Xiaohu from Shandong earned the silver medal, finishing just ahead with a score of 445.85. After the competition, Wang Zongyuan shared his thoughts: "No matter the outcome of each match, every athlete standing here today is already the best. I’m incredibly grateful to my team, coaches, and teammates—they’ve supported me immensely and taught me how to perform at my absolute best in every single event."
