Zhang Xiaohuan, a former Chinese synchronized swimming athlete and current head coach of the national synchronized swimming team, as well as the head coach of the synchronized swimming squad at Beijing Muxiyuan Sports Technical School. On August 8, 2024, she led the Chinese synchronized swimming team to clinch the gold medal in the team event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, scoring a total of 996.1389 points across three routines—the first-ever Olympic gold medal won by the Chinese synchronized swimming team.

Zhang Xiaohuan truly lives up to her name—no matter when you meet her, she’s always beaming with a warm, smiling expression. As the saying goes, "People who love to smile rarely have bad luck," and in her case, it seems to hold absolutely true. Not only does Zhang Xiaohuan possess a sweet and charming appearance, but she’s also incredibly talented across a wide range of disciplines: mastering the piano, dancing, hosting events, and even delivering heartfelt recitations. What’s more, she even designed the swimsuits worn by the Chinese athletes at the Paris Olympics, seamlessly blending them with classic Chinese auspicious motifs that instantly captivated audiences—and earned her global admiration from the moment they debuted.

As an athlete, team captain, coach, and head coach, she experienced six Olympic Games and 11 World Championships in various roles, witnessing firsthand China’s synchronized swimming program steadily advancing—and ultimately reaching the pinnacle of Olympic glory. At the Beijing Olympics, Zhang Xiaohuan and her teammates stood proudly on the podium, clinching the bronze medal in the team event. It was with this unforgettable, hard-earned medal that she officially retired from competitive swimming. But even after hanging up her swimsuit, she seamlessly transitioned into coaching, embarking on a remarkable 15-year career as a synchronized swimming instructor. Whether it’s during holidays or weekends, she dedicates herself entirely to the training grounds and competition arenas—always fueled by the unwavering dream of one day guiding her athletes to Olympic gold.
In October 2022, FINA introduced a series of new rules that brought "game-changing reforms" to synchronized swimming. After thoroughly mastering the updated regulations, coaches now face the dual challenge of executing highly complex routines while maintaining artistic elegance—a demand that places even greater emphasis on choreography. At the Fukuoka World Championships, the Chinese team experienced both highs and lows. They continuously analyzed and interpreted the competition, constantly refined their routines, and engaged in ongoing discussions—not only with judges but also with their rivals. Under her leadership, the team swiftly rallied from their lowest point to stage a remarkable comeback in record time.

At the Paris Olympics, years of dedication finally blossomed into triumph as China’s synchronized swimming team swept both the team and duet events, claiming two gold medals. What’s more, the team event not only secured China’s highest-ever total score under the newly implemented rules but also marked a historic milestone, elevating Chinese synchronized swimming to unprecedented global heights. Looking back on China’s journey to gold at the Paris Games, it was a path paved with both sweat and tears—filled with relentless determination, sheer grit, and unwavering perseverance. Amidst challenges and obstacles, every step forward represented a courageous leap beyond their own limits, proving that true success is born from resilience and relentless pursuit of excellence.
