Australian swimming star Titmus announces retirement
According to a report from Agence France-Presse on October 16, Australian swimming star Ariarne Titmus announced her retirement on the same day. Throughout her career, Titmus has won eight Olympic medals (4 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze) and nine World Championship medals (4 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze). In a video posted on her personal Instagram account, she openly admitted: "This was a tough decision—truly, incredibly difficult—but I feel profoundly at peace now."
Tietmaas, who said in the video, "This was a tough decision, but I’m truly at peace with it," explained her reasoning: "Although I’ve been passionate about swimming since childhood, after stepping away from the pool and embracing life outside the water, I realized that the things that once mattered most to me have now become even more meaningful." She also revealed that the benign ovarian tumor removal she underwent eight months before the Paris Olympics had deeply reminded her of the life—and passions—beyond swimming.
"My life will reboot at 25," Titmus said, expressing her desire to give back to the sport by supporting young athletes who may lack adequate resources. She also mentioned that she’s thoroughly enjoying her current experience as a broadcast commentator, which could potentially become a future career path for her. In the caption accompanying her Instagram post, Titmus wrote: "Dear 7-year-old Ariane, today you’ve retired from competitive swimming… All the dreams you once had—they’ve all come true."
World Aquatics officially wished Titmus well: "Congratulations on a remarkable career, Titmus—from your age-group championships in 2014 to your first-ever selection for the Australian national team in 2017, and now, securing gold medals at two consecutive Olympic Games. Thank you for everything you’ve given to the swimming world—because we know you’ll never truly leave the pool!"
