2024 Short Course World Championships Day 2 Recap: Tang Qianting breaks the Asian record in the 100m breaststroke, while Qin Haiyang advances to the semifinals in second place.
On December 12, the second day of competition at the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming Championships in short course took place. During the evening session, four semifinals and five finals were held. Two Chinese athletes, Tang Qianting and Qin Haiyang, delivered outstanding performances once again in the semifinals, earning their spots in the finals. Notably, Tang Qianting set a new Asian record in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke semifinal.

In the women's 100m breaststroke semifinal, Chinese swimmer Tang Qianting clocked a time of 1:02.37, shattering the Asian record she had set at the Shanghai stop of the World Cup in October. Her swim was just 0.01 second shy of the world record set by Melat in 2013.
Men's 100m breaststroke — Qian Haiyang finishes 1st in his heat to advance to the final.
In the men's 100m breaststroke semifinal, Qian Haiyang, competing in Heat 1, swam a time of 56.04 seconds, easily securing first place in his group. Overall, however, Qian trailed slightly behind Prokhorov, who is competing as a neutral athlete, finishing second and earning a spot in the final.

Women's 100m Backstroke — Regan Smith Breaks Meet Record to Claim Victory
In the women's 100m backstroke final, American swimmer Regan Smith shattered the World Championships record with a time of 54.27 seconds. Another U.S. athlete, Burkoff, finished second in 54.93 seconds, while Canadian swimmer Wilm claimed bronze with a time of 55.75 seconds.
Men's 100m Backstroke — Neutral Athlete Sets World Junior Record to Claim Victory
In the men's 100m backstroke final, Lifytsev, competing as a neutral athlete, set a new world junior record with a time of 48.76 seconds. Hungarian swimmer Kocs finished second with 48.79 seconds, while Stokowski claimed bronze in 49.16 seconds.

Women's 50m Butterfly — Walsh Secures Victory Without Surprise
Despite a 0.75-second reaction time, Walsh, who had previously set world records in both the heats and semifinals, still claimed victory with a powerful performance, swimming a stunning 24.01—only the second-fastest time in history. French swimmer Gastaldello finished second, while Australian athlete Perkins took home the bronze medal.
Men's 50m Butterfly — Ponti Breaks World Record Again to Claim Gold
Ponti swam a time of 21.32 seconds in the final, improving his own newly set world record by 0.11 second. Canadian athlete Harun finished second with 21.67 seconds, while Dutch swimmer Koolsteijn took third place at 21.68 seconds.

Mixed 4x50m medley relay — Russia edges out Canada to claim gold
The Russian team, competing as a neutral participant, delivered a stunning performance in the mixed 4x50m medley relay, swimming a time of 1:35.36 to clinch the gold medal. Canada finished second with 1:35.94, while the U.S. claimed bronze in 1:36.20.
